Leadership and Social Impact

by Juma Nyamori

There are many things that drew me to Leading Your International School (LYIS): The focus on opportunity for all, inclusion in its various facets and commitment to level-up leadership in international education could be rounded to be the spearhead of the burning desire with which I approached the organisation when I first learnt about it. However, my firm intention was cemented when I learnt about LYIS’s partnership with“Raising Futures Kenya” in social impact programmes in my home country of Kenya, particularly the “Seed of Hope Training Institute” for vocational training.

You see, this was not just a feeling of connection, given my proximity to the programme or immediate appreciation of the impact, as I had first-hand experience with this community and its educational needs, although these were very important factors that truly melted my heart. It was more about the recognition of LYIS’s commitment to walking the talk in terms of inclusion.

During the Inaugural LYIS Leadership conference – #LYIS25 in the beautiful city of Foshan in China, I was deeply touched by the love expressed by my fellow leaders for this community in Kenya and the programme for the development of skills for young people in my country of Kenya. I committed myself to visit the programme for the first time and convey this love and commitment from a Dinner Fundraising that raised $700 for the programme.

I would like to take this opportunity to express deep-felt appreciation to my fellow leaders from the beneficiaries of this programme and confirm that this help goes a long way in assuring so many young people of hope: Hope for a future and confirmation of the power of humanity.

I met young people who were very grateful and appreciative that somebody held out a hand, from far in the distance: A hand strong but gentle enough to assure them that the world cares! I met beautiful people who were full of love and laughed deeply! Laughter filled the room and hid their anxieties about the future. Laughter that spoke of hope and faith. Laughter that told you that everything will be okay!

On behalf of these young people, I say Ahsante! Thank you for the opportunity and a chance at life! Thank you to all around the world who continue to identify with projects like this that spur social inclusion! Thank you, LYIS and “Raising Futures Kenya” for your commitment to humanity and the ideal of inclusion!
