When I first embarked on the Leading Your International School (LYIS) library course, I never imagined how profoundly it would shape my vision and approach to leading our school library at Achieve Xiamen International School (AXIS). As the Head of Library, I have always been passionate about creating an engaging and dynamic learning space, but this course provided the structure and strategies needed to take our library to the next level.
One of the key takeaways from the LYIS course was the importance of aligning the library’s mission with the school’s overall vision. At AXIS, we strive to foster global connections, leadership, and community, and our library now actively reflects these values. We have redefined our library as more than just a space for books – it is a vibrant hub of collaboration, inquiry, and creativity.
A major development following the course was the introduction of our new library vision and mission. Inspired by LYIS’s insights, we focused on making the library a place that empowers students, engages parents, and supports staff. This shift has transformed our programming, leading to initiatives like our 100-Day Reading Marathon, multiple book weeks, and book swap events that celebrate diverse literary voices.
One of the most significant changes has been our approach to student agency. I learned through LYIS that giving students a voice in how the library functions leads to deeper engagement. We now involve students in book selections, library displays, and even policy decisions. This has created a sense of ownership and excitement about using the library as a learning space.
Collaboration with staff has also strengthened. The course emphasised the power of working closely with teachers to integrate library resources into the curriculum. By doing so, we have positioned the library as an essential academic support system, offering a UOI wall, Information Literacy and Research Literacy classes, and EAL Integrated classes.
Of course, challenges remain. Balancing innovation with logistical constraints while fostering deeper collaboration with teachers is an ongoing effort. However, the LYIS course equipped me with the tools and confidence to navigate these challenges with a strategic mindset.
Ultimately, leading an international school library is about more than managing books—it’s about fostering a culture of learning, inquiry, and connection. The insights gained from LYIS have not only enhanced our library at AXIS but have also shaped me into a more confident and strategic leader. I am excited for what the future holds and grateful for the opportunity to continue growing alongside our school community.
LYIS is delighted to announce our upcoming library leadership course in May, at Dulwich College Puxi, CWA Changshu and Sedbergh Vietnam, delivered by the vastly experienced Sarah Pavey. Sarah was Librarian for Epsom College in the UK for 11 years and has been a Library Consultant and Trainer for nearly 20 years.
