Earlier this week, LYIS had the honour of visiting our Leading Your International School members, Dr Jake Madden, Group Head of Schools for Aoba International Education Systems and Christopher Hoddinott, Head of Aoba-Japan International School, Bunkyo Campus.

A delightful community location, we learned a tremendous amount from Jake about the group, its history, origins and far-reaching impact across Tokyo and Japan.
Jake, like me, is incredibly passionate about all things leadership and his willingness to share his thoughts on “How do we build capacity within our international schools?” was a masterclass on his decades of experience in doing just that. What impressed me so much about Jake was his willingness to ask the big questions around learning and teaching. Making sure that his school leaders have the right leadership resources forms a large part of his role.

Jake works from a shared desk space with his entire leadership, HR and Comms teams. There is no ‘executive’ office for him at the top of the building or away from his colleagues. He uses meeting rooms that his colleagues use and books them like anyone else does. Leadership is all about humility.
Christopher and I were able to talk openly about his transition from China to Japan and the similarities and differences that this has presented in terms of academic approaches, students, and the workplace culture.

As a new Campus Head, he is focused on building trust, listening to and collaborating with his teams.
It was interesting to hear that applications to US Universities are down 50% – in part due to the current geopolitical climate. An observable trend that may well be presenting incredible opportunities for some of Japan’s own universities and highly respected global companies to respond to.
The school has a thriving Music and Arts scene, including jazz music and fashion design. Creativity, freedom of expression and innovation are among its student strengths.
A special visit and connecting again with our members who lead with such passion and purpose is always a pleasure.

A heartfelt thanks to Jake, Christopher and Nami Holderman for making our time at the school such a memorable experience.
