After decades in school leadership, it’s rare to attend a workshop that doesn’t just reaffirm what you know, but genuinely challenges you to grow. That’s precisely what I experienced during Matt Topliss’ session on “The Power of Transformational Leadership in Global Education” at the #LYIS25 Conference in Foshan.

Having led schools across diverse contexts and continents, I’ve seen the education landscape evolve. Yet, Matt’s workshop reminded me that no matter how seasoned we are, there is always space to reflect, to recalibrate, and to realign our leadership practice with the future we want to create.
What stood out wasn’t just Matt’s deep knowledge – it was his ability to bridge theory with lived experience. He articulated the core principles of transformational leadership with clarity and purpose, grounding them in the realities of international education. This wasn’t a checklist of strategies; it was an invitation to lead with authenticity, vision, and humanity.

One particularly resonant theme was the interdependence of leadership and curriculum –particularly within the International Baccalaureate framework. It underscored what many of us know instinctively but don’t always articulate: that effective leadership is not peripheral to learning – it’s integral to it. Our approach to leadership directly shapes the educational experience of our students and the professional growth of our staff.

Despite my years of experience, the session pushed me to ask critical questions: Am I still leading with the same sense of curiosity and courage I ask of my teachers? Do I create enough space for innovation and reflection within my leadership team?

Matt’s workshop offered more than professional development. It offered a moment of pause – a chance to step back and consider the legacy we’re building as leaders. I walked away not only with renewed clarity but also with practical strategies to strengthen culture, develop capacity, and inspire transformation within my school.

In a profession that demands constant evolution, this workshop was a timely reminder: leadership is not about arriving – it’s about continually becoming.
