🇲🇾 What’s it like to work in one of the 𝙏𝙊𝙋-𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡𝙨 in the WHOLE of Malaysia?
🇲🇾 How does leadership look through the lens of an established local school compared to an international school?
🇲🇾 Days ago, Leading Your International School enjoyed visiting Chung Ling Private High School in Penang – A School that dates back over 100 years and is STEEPED in culture and ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.
The School’s Principal – Mr Wu, talked openly and from the heart about the delights of leading a school for nearly 20 years. What was scheduled for a 2-hour meeting ended up being a 5-hour, so pleased was Mr Wu and his staff that we were visiting the school. Chinese hospitality makes us feel like we are home and incredibly welcome.
Just recently, the school’s Art teacher formally retired, aged 93 years old, having spent the last 60 years teaching at the school, quite possibly a record we believe. The school has a deep sense of loyalty from its staff, who see it as their duty to put the school’ and students’ benefits ahead of themselves.
Mr Wu grew up in a very poor family and much of his leadership and his humility he says, can be traced back to his childhood. Everything that he has become has been the embodiment of hard work. He was an outstanding Art student, but at the time was forced to give it up in order to study Chinese due to the Malaysian Education System. This had a significant impact on him, as he realised Chinese children were unable to choose what they enjoyed – something he has dedicated his leadership to reversing.
Recent investment in the campus has been rejuvenating, however, Mr Wu still has to dedicate a significant proportion of his time to fundraising the £350,000 a year the school needs in addition to its minimal school fees and external donations.
Chung Ling High School was founded in 1917. The school started offering Art stream sixth-form courses in Pre-University in 1973.
The more Mr Wu and I talk, the more I get the sense he is deeply committed to positively influencing the school’s students and inspiring them through an enormous co-curricular development programme. Chung Ling takes part in everything, and more often than not its students return victorious.
Underlying its entire curriculum is the Confucian philosophy are: Morality Wisdom, Health, Collectiveness, Beauty, and Practical Work Experience.
At Chung Ling, everyone is equal. There is no special treatment. Prefects perform a range of tasks that demonstrate and model the expected values and behaviours of all students.
Leading Your International School extends its warmest appreciation to Mr Wu and the Senior Leadership Team at Chong Ling Private High School for sharing so much about the school and its leadership with us.
