LYIS Visits Merchiston International School Shenzhen

by LYIS

Our latest school visit took us to Merchiston International School, Shenzhen to meet with the school’s International and Chinese leadership teams.

Situated in the Longhua region of Shenzhen, the school claims to be the first and only British International Boarding School in Shenzhen. The recent visit from the Council of International Schools highly commended the whole school approach to safeguarding and wellbeing and the commitment of all the MIS staff in creating supportive personal connections with students.

An impressive school tour takes in ‘Napier History Museum’ – a spectacular historical insight into those who have played a significant part in the history and development of Merchiston over the course of nearly five hundred years.

The School’s Acting Headmaster Mark B.Bridgman, Head of Juniors (Longhua & Qianhai) and Head of Teaching & Learning, Maria Priscila Perdomo de Brum were very keen to point out that any school’s success is due to the coming together of an effective team. Student agency and ownership is also very important to the school.

An intriguing campus that was originally designed as part of an extravagant shopping mall complex, the campus feels incredibly spacious and its central atrium is visible from all angles.

Students take sports very seriously (particularly Basketball) and the athletics track that meanders in and out of the campus is a reminder that the footprint of a campus can be used in very imaginative ways indeed.

MIS alumni have secured placements at top universities worldwide, including multiple entrants to Imperial College London, and University College London (UCL) and with a significant number of applications to Oxford and Cambridge, more good news may yet be around the corner.

A special thank you to Mark Bridgman for having us and to Asad (Keyu) Ma, Assistant to Principal and Head of University Guidance Centre for liaising during our school visit. Also, to Ben Webster, Group Principal (Boarding and Pastoral) for taking the time to talk us through the school’s ongoing support, development and commitment to the safeguarding and wellbeing of its students. We wish the school all the very best and look forward to visiting again in the future.

Our next school visit took us to The Harbour School, Hong Kong.
