LYIS Visits UIA International School of Tokyo

by André Double

Our stay in Tokyo continued this week, with a long-overdue stop at the UIA International School of Tokyo to meet with the inspiring Principal, Michael Taylor.

Michael has been a professional advocate and friend for several years, a great thinker and question maker and a general all-round supporter of Leading Your International School, our aims and ambitions. His time and benevolence have been a valuable insight, as he has been only too kind in sharing his career insights, lessons in leadership, accreditations and equal passion around all things leadership.

We discussed a range of subjects, including approaches to the IB, learning information systems, school principalship and its pathways – the conversation brimming with ideas and common interests.

Michael’s key lesson in leadership was the ongoing need for principals to learn about themselves, their personal values and strengths.

Michael is all about growth and humility, and I am honoured to have learned so much in such a short time from him. I am also delighted that our Leading Your International School Library Course will be heading to Tokyo next year!

A huge thank you to Michael for carving out some time for Amy and I, and to the school’s Head of Primary, Jessica and Librarian, Andrea.

We are looking forward to what comes next and are very grateful to Michael for his offer of support to our current LYIS-Q learners.
