LYIS most recent school visit in China, we arrived at the phenomenal campus of Benenden Bilingual School Guangzhou (BBSG) and spent time with the school’s equally incredible Principal Louisa Shen.
A fabulous conversation about all things school leadership and a particular strength of Lousia’s and a passion of mine – Human Resources. Louisa noted that great school leaders “Always carry a toolkit for HR, and they must adapt their toolkit to the specific tool context”.
When we moved our discussion onto learning and teaching Louisa spoke passionately about the adoption of the Danielson Framework, and how it helps teachers to be more observant of ‘educational trends’. One of the most important aspects of her role, notes Louisa is to “be able to inspire teachers”. A research base is key to moving the quality of learning forward. Recognising a core set of practices that consistently have positive effects on learning outcomes.
When it comes to teachers, the school looks for those with a ‘growth mindset’ who are open to new challenges and continually seek out opportunities to develop themselves personally. “Teachers should be in full alignment with the school’s academic initiatives” Louisa added.
I get the impression from Louisa that she is an expert communicator, an incredibly passionate educator and leader and she is committed to the highest possible quality of ongoing education that students at Beneden will receive.
